SESSION TITLE: CENTRE BACKS BREAKING OPPOSITION LINES
OBJECTIVES
- Centre backs break opposition press and lines
- Centre backs to exploit space when in possession
ORGANISATION
Pitch size: Half of the pitch using full width and length.
Team formations: Teams play in an 8v6 with the defending team playing in a 1-4-2-1 vs the attacking team playing in a 4-2.
INSTRUCTIONS
Start position is attacking 8 tries to lob a pass into yellow 9 which is collected by the goalkeeper. Game can also restart as a goal kick from the goalkeeper
The yellow team score points by successfully passing the ball to a teammate to receive and control in the end zone. The receiving player can only enter the end zone as the pass is travelling. The red team score points by scoring in the main goal.
KEY COACHING POINTS
- Dispersal to play out from the back
- Rotational movement of centre back and holding midfielder
- Play with head up and see space to drive forward
- Holding midfielder offer defensive security
PROGRESSION / VARIATIONS
Progress from a functional practice to a Small sided game (SSG) using half of the pitch in a 9v9.
