SESSION TITLE: MIDFIELDERS CREATING ATTACKS FROM DEEP

OBJECTIVES

  • coach holding midfielders to create attacks from deep
  • coach penetration
  • coach choice of passes and passing priorities

ORGANISATION

For this practice, use  2/3 length and full width of the pitch
In the initial practice, start off with an 8v8 with the attacking team playing in a 2-2-3-1 (no centre backs) vs defending team in a 1-4-2-1. The centre back for attacking team and wide players for the defending team will be added in the consolidation practice.
No restrictions to practice and normal regulations apply.

INSTRUCTIONS

Game starts with the defending team No 8 trying to feed a pass into No 10 which is intercepted by attacking No 6 and we are live.
Game will restart from the end zone with the feeder playing a ball into the attacking team.
The attacking team score in the main goal while the defending team score by running with the ball under control over the end zone.

KEY COACHING POINTS

  • On retrieval of possession, one of the holding midfielders move to a different line to receive.
  • Move to be in line with the shoulder of opposition midfielder so ball can be played alongside.
  • Choice of supporting position – behind, along or in front of player on the ball
  • Receiving skills of player on ball – receive on back foot, play with front foot
  • Receive ball in between the attacking and midfield lines of the opposition
  • Constantly assess your position, where the ball, space and opponent are
  • Be constantly available for a pass
  • Penetrate quickly by playing forward quickly and under control
  • Make a decision quickly based on the picture you see
  • Choice of passing option
    – into the centre forward who can be supported quickly by the 3 attacking midfielders.
    – into the No 10 who is playing in between the line (in the zone 14 area).
    – floated over the defence into the path of the wide attacking midfielder who can run onto it and cross.
    – slide pass in between opposition full back and centre back for wide attacking midfielder to run onto.

DIFFERENT PICTURES

Pass into centre forward who is supported by 3 AM.
Pass into the CAM in between the lines.
Pass over defence into path of wide attacking midfielder.
Pass in between full back and centre back to run of wide attacking midfielder or centre forward.

PROGRESSION / VARIATIONS

Progress to phase of play by adding other centre backs for the attacking team and wide attacking players for defending team.
