SESSION TITLE: A TEAM TO PLAY PENETRATIVE PASSES
OBJECTIVES
- encourage players to penetrate opponents block
- encourage creativity when playing penetrative passes
- develop players ability in possession
TECHNICAL PRACTICE
ORGANISATION
Playing Area: 30 yards x 30 yards
Teams: Players grouped into 2 teams of 5
Set up: sets of poles are placed all around the playing area to form 6 gate goals.
Instruction: Players keep the ball until an opportune moment to play a penetrative pass to a teammate through the gate goal.
Let the game run for a few mins to allow players get a hang of it.
This is a good warm-up practice before a match.
COACHING POINTS
- Be creative. Use more than just the basic push pass.
- different types of passes
- keep the ball when you have to and when possible, penetrate
- ensure to use appropriate pass and avoid elaboration. Use basic push pass if it is on
- use disguise, feints, 1v1, change of direction etc
- movement and support of teammates in relation to the man on the ball
- always look for the spare man and unprotected gate
- 3rd man runs to support player about to recite the ball
PROGRESSION
- Add gate goals or reduce the number of players to make it easier
- reduce gate goals or increase the number of players to make it tougher
- players can make a penetrative dribble through the gate with the ball
SMALL SIDED GAME
ORGANISATION
Playing Area: 74yards x 50 yards
Team shape: Teams play in a 3-2-3 formation
Instruction: Play starts from the goalkeeper
The defending team are instructed to play a high line (offside line) and restricted from dropping into their defensive third until the ball goes in there.
COACHING POINTS
1.
- Play with head up especially defenders and midfielders
- Transition- Moment opposition just lost ball is perfect for quick penetrative passes before they regroup
- Movement of centre forward and wide players looking to exploit behind the lines.
- Come short initially to get in behind
- 1v1, feints, take one, combination play, change of direction.
- Third man runs
- Play on the shoulder of the defence
- Anticipation and quick reaction during transitions
- Different types of passes – short and long
- Diagonal passes

Penetrative passes from GK or DF or MF
Penetration via crosses, forward runs or dribbling
PROGRESSION
Remove restriction on defenders entering their defensive third
